Pleasantville, Newfoundland and Labrador
Pleasantville is a neighbourhood in the east end of the city of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It extends from the north side of Quidi Vidi Lake, northward to Newfoundland Drive, and is largely made up of apartment blocks. Pleasantville is the former site of the United States military's Fort Pepperrell and, later, Pepperrell Air Force Base, which closed in 1961. Many of the buildings originally constructed by the US military in 1941 have been demolished, and others converted to affordable housing and apartments. The former American junior and senior high school building, initially opened for the 1956-57 school year, has been converted into condominiums.
Pleasantville is home to a reserve base of the Canadian Forces and the Country Ribbon meat processing plant, as well as the former site of the Janeway Children's Hospital, now demolished.
Today, Pleasantville is undergoing a substantial amount of construction, with a major revitalization effort occurring. As of August 2012, construction includes the new Department of National Defense building, a new luxury apartment building, and a variety of condominiums.〔("Community within a community: Housing plan pitched for Pleasantville" ), CBC News, Nov 19, 2008.〕〔Steve Bartlett, ("Pleasantville marches on" ), ''The Telegram'', September 18, 2010.〕〔("Former Fort Pepperell site to be cleaned" ), ''The Independent'', November 22, 2011.〕
